To explain what ChessChoices is, I'd like to explain how I came up with the idea. I love chess puzzles. Between just Chess.com and Lichess, I've played around 20,000, not counting other puzzle sites like ChessTempo or Chessbase.
But after playing so many puzzles, there were some puzzles I played where I thought "There is no way this is a winning move here." But I was wrong, and I knew I was wrong, because in a puzzle there MUST be a solution.
I realized then that puzzles as they are online instill a type of deficit in a player: you assume that there is only one right move, regardless of how losing it looks to you. Online puzzles usually teach you to find only moves, usually in dire situations where, if you don't make the right choice, you are either throwing the game or losing on the spot.
I've heard Grandmasters talk about cheating in Chess (a lot, if you know the Chess community), and they say that all they need to cheat is for someone to send them some sort of signal that there's a winning move when there is one on the board. Just send them a quick vibration and they'll see what they need to see. In a way, chess puzzles put you in a similar situation. But if you were in the exact same situation as some of these harder puzzles, would you even realize you were winning?
That's where ChessChoices comes in. Basically, this site presents you with two positions (or one if you choose), and asks you, what does the character of this position look like to you? We have databases with hundreds of thousands of different positions, many taken from real games, and ask you to think about if you're winning or not.
We also throw in puzzles from time to time to help you see when you are in these sorts of positions in a game, so the next time you take a think in a game you can deploy the tactical understanding you've developed on top of puzzles.
I hope that ChessChoices can help augment your understanding of Chess to some degree. Thank you for visiting my site, I hope you like it :)
